Vincent (Version '03) - thumbnails

story and look

vincent, wandering through his black and white real life world and daydreaming in colour super-8, meets daniel, like him in his late teens, and the skater girl penelope - the three of them go on an improvised trip, each of them having another motivation for that journey...

geeky stuff

"vincent" (austria '96/'03, 44 min., drama) was my first attempt in doing a longer length fiction movie. the film was shot in and around vienna/austria in november of 1995 on super 16, some additional scenes were shot in skeveningen/holland. most of the movie is in black and white, those shots/scenes in colour were filmed on super-8. we had a premiere of "vincent" at the filmcasino in vienna in the summer of 1996 and it was also shown at the "film fest wels" in the same year. in 2003 i finally decided to shorten the movie from its original 62 min. to the now 44 min. version. since it would have been to expensive to recut/redub the movie on film (including work on the film negative) i made a mini dv copy of the beta sp transfer (that had been done from the original 35mm blow-up) and edited the "vincent" (version '03) on final cut pro. the .mp4/h.264 encoded file you can download via archive.org is this 44 min. version (including the just recently added english subtitles). i tried to find a reasonable compromise between file size and picture quality and think that the 332 mb file (encoded @ 896 kbits/sec for picture - best quality/multi-pass - and 128 kbits/sec for sound using the aac codec) looks quite good when sitting one or two meters away from your monitor/tv.

more about "vincent"

"vincent" is definitely not a movie to watch when you are in the mood for a lighter kind of entertainment since it does ask some kind of attention from the viewer. at the same time i think you might enjoy it if you like those medium paced art house movies that tell a more personal story while using a different kind of visual language/aesthetic than mainstream cinema does. with "vincent" i tried to do a kind of 'character portrait movie', the focus of the film is on the way the main character perceives the world, therefore the way the story develops/is told is more important than the story itself - some examples for that are the mixture of fiction and documentary style storytelling you find in "vincent" or the montage of b/w and colour material: everything is used to explore/visualise the dream walking state of mind that vincent is in.

the links, where to download it

first have a look at the "vincent" teaser. since this is a short extract of the movie (uploaded in the same resolution as the whole movie) you can find out if you want to go ahead and download the whole 332 mb file and also test the playback capabilities of your movie player. in case you have problems viewing this file you can download the free and open source vlc (video lan client).

if you liked the teaser: here on archive.org you can download the whole movie "vincent" (44 min., 332 mb, mpeg-4 / h.264 encoded).

finally there is some extra footage you might be interested in, an "interview" with vincent. this short extra is in fact a scene that did not make it into the 2003 shortened version of "vincent", i still like it, so here it is as a kind of bonus material.

one last link: the newly formed "indie movies" group on ourmedia. this is a place to discuss your independent movie projects that are made available for download via ourmedia/archive.org. possible discussions about "vincent" can be found here, too.

enjoy,

valentin
