About our new features
Here's the scoop about some of the new features on Ourmedia:
Channels
Channels are simply a way of pulling together any collection of media items — created by you or others — that you'd like to organize by subject or interest. It can be your personal broadcasting website or it can serve as playlist page where you can showcase cool videos, songs or podcasts you've spotted online.
If you're into mash-ups, you can create a Mash-ups channel like this one, with a graphic/photo and a one or two sentence introduction. Then you can start populating your channel by adding videos, music or podcasts.
You can add items from anywhere on the Web, not just from Ourmedia. Think of them as multimedia playlists with a difference: You can have conversations there as well.
Invite as many people as you'd like to add items to your channel, or keep membership open and let anyone join. Channels are also an ideal way for organizations or companies to organize materials around a subject, theme or project.
Every channel has a media RSS feed, so you can publicize your channel on your personal blog and have people subscribe to the latest media items or blog entries posted there.
Here are the channels on the site so far. We're just getting started with channels, so let us know what else you'd like to see.
Producer showcase
Producer showcase shows off top videos, podcasts and musical works from around the Web, linking back to the originating site so the artist-producers can get full credit.
Anyone can contact us and ask to become a content programmer for the Producer Showcase Channel. Then, whenever you add a new video (from anywhere on the Web) to the channel, it appears as the lead video on Ourmedia!
Streaming music
We're excited about our new Streaming Music Channel, which we're featuring in the open-source Flash media player. Click on a song and you should hear it play at once. Scroll down to see dozens of choices.The channel contains music and musical mash-ups from anywhere on the Web. Just join the channel and you'll instantly be a content programmer for the Streaming Music Channel. Then, whenever you add a new song (from anywhere on the Web) to the channel, it appears as the lead music item on Ourmedia's front page.
In addition, you can create your own personalized music channels. Just log in and go to Channels to get started. Visitors can then listen to your playlist in the player you choose.
Featured podcasts
Click on a podcast in the front-page Flash media player to listen to a podcast. Scroll down to choose from dozens of selections.Anyone who joins the Featured Podcasts Channel can program in new podcasts (from anywhere on the Web). It then appears as the lead podcast on in the player on our front page.
You can also create your own personalized podcast channels. Just log in and go to Channels to get started.
Community talk
Community talk replaces the Ourmedia group blog. The Community Talk Channel pulls from several sources.
Just post an entry to your personal blog on Ourmedia and it will appear in Community talk. (We're working on implementing this functionality.)
Cool projects & widgets
The Cool Projects & Widgets Channel is one of the channels we'll be showcasing on our front page from time to time. Anyone can subscribe to the channel, and any member can comment there. If you'd like to participate as a contribute, just contact the channel operator.
